Piotr Sułkowski

The general and artistic director of the Warmia and Mazury Philharmonic in Olsztyn, he has extensive experience in operas, acquired through his many years of work as a conductor, and subsequently as artistic director of the Kraków Opera (2006–07) and the Wildwood Festival Opera Orchestra in Arkansas (US). He has prepared numerous premieres of operas, including several world premieres, among them Szymanowski’s unknown operetta Lottery for Husbands or Fiancé No. 69 at the Polish Music Festival. His interpretation of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, staged in 2004, was hailed the best performance of the year at the Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. Sułkowski is a co-founder of the Kraków Chamber Opera, and was deputy director of the Polish Radio Choir (2008–09), music director of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2011, and first guest conductor of the Tulsa Signature Symphony (US) from 2008 to 2014. The founder and artistic director of the Barbican Festival, he launched the National Pantheon Foundation in 2010.

Sułkowski has collaborated with many orchestras, and has also taught conducting classes at the Bydgoszcz Academy of Music.

In 2010 he prepared and conducted the first performance of Bizet’s Carmen with Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra and the Premier Ensemble de la A.G.A.O. choir in Pamplona in Spain. He also has led the international opera project Fidelioto the Victims of the Holocaust. Together with the Warmia and Mazury Philharmonic Orchestra he performed Puccini’s Tosca in Spain (2011).

In 2011 Sułkowski received his PhD, and in 2015 his post-doctoral degree in music. From 2012 to 2016 he was a member of the Programme Board of the Olsztyn Radio. He is also the deputy president of the Board of the Association of Polish Philharmonics. He received the Statuette of Saint Jacob for culture in 2012, the Personality of Warmia and Mazury statuette (2013), the Gloria Artis Medal (2014), the Pegasus statuette (2015), and the Silver Cross of Merit (2016).
