Leonard Slatkin

In 2017-18, internationallya cclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin celebrateshis tenth and final season as Music Director of theDetroit Symphony Orchestra, and his first season inthe new role of Directeur Musical Honoraire withthe Orchestre National de Lyon. He also welcomesthe publication of his second book, Leading Tones:Reflections on Music, Musicians, and the MusicIndustry. His guest-conducting schedule includesengagements with the St. Louis Symphony, NewYork Philharmonic, Polish National Radio SymphonyOrchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin,and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.Recent career highlights include a three-week tourof Asia with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; toursof the U.S. and Europe with the Orchestre Nationalde Lyon and a winter Mozart Festival in Detroit.Slatkin’s more than 100 recordings have garneredsix Grammy awards and 33 nominations. His recent Naxos recordings include works by Saint-Saëns,Ravel, and Berlioz (with the Orchestre Nationalde Lyon) and music by Copland, Rachmaninoff,Borzova, McTee, and John Williams (with the DetroitSymphony Orchestra). In addition, he has recordedthe complete Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovskysymphonies with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Arts,Slatkin also holds the rank of Chevalier in the FrenchLégion d’honneur. He has received the Leagueof American Orchestras’ Gold Baton Award,and the 2013 ASCAP Deems Taylor SpecialRecognition Award for his debut book,Conducting Business.Slatkin has conducted virtually all the leadingorchestras in the world. As Music Director, he hasheld posts in New Orleans; St. Louis; Washington DC;London (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra); andLyon, France. He has also served as Principal GuestConductor in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Minneapolis,and Cleveland.
