Established in 1868, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra. The Zurich ensemble consists of just over 100 musicians from 20 countries and can be heard performing about 50 programmes at more than 100 concerts per season.
In the past two decades, the orchestra has performed in over 70 cities in 14 countries and has been accompanied on its tours by distinguished soloists such as Rudolf Buchbinder, Alfred Brendel, Julia Fischer, Hélène Grimaud, Gidon Kremer, Radu Lupu, Yo-Yo Ma, Maria João Pires and Sabine Meyer.
More than 40 CD recordings document the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich’s rise to prominence. The recordings of all Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms and Schubert symphonies attracted considerable attention from audiences and critics alike, and garnered accolades such as the German Record Critics’ Award, the Prix Choc, the MIDEM Classical Award and the Echo Klassik Prize.
In recent years, the orchestra has developed close relations with the guest conductors Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit and Bernard Haitink. Over a period of almost 20 years as Chief Conductor until the end of the 2013/14 season, David Zinman had a key influence on the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. A new era has now been ushered in with the arrival of the new French Music Director, Lionel Bringuier.
