Warsaw Philharmonic Choir

The Warsaw Philharmonic Choir started its artisticactivity in 1953 under Zbigniew Soja, followed byRoman Kuklewicz (1955–71), Józef Bok (1971–74),Antoni Szaliński (1974–78), and Henryk Wojnarowski(1978–2016). In January 2017 Bartosz Michałowskibecame its director.Apart from concerts in Poland, the WarsawPhilharmonic Choir is very active on internationalstages. It has performed in Austria, Belgium, Denmark,Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Italy,Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, andthe United Kingdom, performing under the batons ofeminent Polish and foreign conductors and composersMoshe Atzmon, Gary Bertini, Sergiu Comissiona,Henryk Czyż, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Fedoseyev, ValeyGergiev, Sir Charles Groves, Jacek Kaspszyk, KazimierzKord, Jan Krenz, Helmut Koch, Witold Lutosławski,Lorin Maazel, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Igor Markevitch,Andrzej Markowski, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, SeijiOzawa, Krzysztof Penderecki, Zoltán Peskó, Sir SimonRattle, Helmuth Rilling, Wolfgang Rennert, LjubomirRomansky, Witold Rowicki, Hans Martin Schneidt, JerzySemkow, David Shallon, Giuseppe Sinopoli, StanisławSkrowaczewski, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Strawiński,Tadeusz Strugała, Stanisław Wisłocki, Antoni Wit, andBohdan Wodiczko.The vast repertoire of the choir covers over 400oratorios and a cappella choral works from medievalto contemporary. Polish music, and especially theworks of Krzysztof Penderecki, hold a very specialplace in its repertoire. The choir also boasts a lavishdiscography, with recordings that have garneredacclaim and precious awards from across the world,including five Grammy nominations in 1991–2008,the Record Academy Award 2005 from the Japanesemagazine Record Geijutsu, Orphée d’Or 2010 – ArturoToscanini of the French l’Academie du Disque Lyrique).In February 2017, their first CD from the Pendereckiconducts Penderecki series was awarded Grammy forBest Choral Performance.
